A common issue in the packaging industry is waste. Inevitably, all products that are packaged will need to be unpackaged and the packaging needs to be disposed of. Many of these materials are not sustainable and will ultimately end up in landfills and overtime make a deeper impact on the environment.
With the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Korpack recognizes that sustainability is no longer a trend but a key strategy for business processes.
There are many different packaging options that fall under the umbrella of sustainability and we are happy to help you choose the right one for you.
What is Sustainable Packaging?
Sustainable packaging refers to the sourcing, development, and use of packaging solutions that have a minimal footprint and environmental impact. Essentially, sustainable packaging is eco-friendly and does not contribute to the further depletion of natural resources.
With consumers becoming more aware of the negative impacts packaging can have on the environment, many are straying away from harmful products. The demand for sustainable packaging is increasing but many companies are unaware of what qualifies products as sustainable.
Recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable all fall under the realm of sustainability. However, it is important to note that they are not all synonymous with each other. If a product is recyclable, it does not mean that it is biodegradable or compostable and vice versa. According to the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, to be considered sustainable packaging the packaging must meet the following criteria: be made from eco-friendly materials, is biodegradable, and is able to be reused or recycled.
Benefits of Sustainable Packaging
The key behind sustainable initiatives is the many benefits that come along with it. While sustainable packaging can be an investment up front, the long-term benefits outweigh that. Sustainable packaging can:
- Reduce your impact on the environment
- Improve your company’s image and reputation
- Save costs over time
