Packaging Beyond the Bottle: A Craft Beverage Guide to Secondary Packaging

For a craft beverage brand, most of the attention goes to what’s inside the can or bottle, as it should. But once the liquid is in the container, a second set of packaging decisions begins, and it’s the one that shapes how the product looks on a shelf, how it travels, and how much of it arrives intact. This is secondary packaging: the label or sleeve on the container, the multipack that holds units together, and the shipper that gets them to a store or a doorstep. This guide walks through those decisions the way a brand actually faces them, and it’s written to be useful whether or not you ever work with us.

Decorating the Container: Labels, Sleeves, or Printed Cans

How a can or bottle is decorated is the most visible packaging decision a beverage brand makes, and there are three main routes. Each has real trade-offs in cost, minimums, lead time, and look.

  • Pressure-sensitive labels. Printed adhesive labels applied to the container. They’re flexible, widely available at low and even no-minimum runs from digital printers, and fast to turn around, which suits small batches and frequent SKU changes. The trade-off is that a label has visible edges and doesn’t wrap seamlessly.
  • Shrink sleeves. A printed flexible film that wraps the entire container and is heat-shrunk to fit, giving a seamless 360-degree surface. Sleeves shine for bold, full-body artwork on cans, hard seltzers, and RTDs. Trade-offs: per-unit cost is usually higher, minimums are often larger because the film has to be seamed, and artwork has to be laid out carefully or it distorts at the can shoulders.
  • Direct-to-can printing. Artwork printed straight onto the aluminum, with no label or sleeve at all. It looks the most premium because there’s no edge or seam, but it typically involves higher volumes and less flexibility for frequent changes.

A recurring, avoidable problem is worth calling out, because brands run into it constantly: labels or sleeves that come off. Almost every time, the root cause is a material or adhesive that didn’t match the environment the container actually lives in. Craft beverage packaging sits in coolers, gets buried in ice, comes out covered in condensation, and rides around in trucks. The decoration has to survive all of that and still look like the brand intended, which makes material and adhesive selection a functional decision, not just a cosmetic one.

A 2026 Shift Worth Knowing: PVC to PETG

Shrink sleeves have traditionally used PVC film. The industry is moving toward PETG, and the driver is recyclability: PVC contaminates the PET recycling stream, and recyclers have flagged it, while PETG is accepted for PET packages. As recyclability rules and Extended Producer Responsibility programs tighten, a PVC sleeve becomes a less friendly choice. For a brand specifying a new sleeve, PETG with a perforated tear strip is increasingly the default. It’s the kind of detail that’s easy to miss and awkward to reverse later.

Bundling Units: The Multipack Decision

The multipack is both a merchandising tool and a structural one. It has to look good on a shelf and hold the units together through handling. The common formats:

  • Shrink bundles. Film wrapped around a group of cans or bottles, sometimes over a tray or pad. It’s the lowest-cost way to hold units together and can run printed for branding, but it offers less protection than a structured carton and, as plastic, sits on the wrong side of tightening recyclability rules.
  • Paperboard clip and topper carriers. Fiber-based clips and toppers that grip the tops of cans, engineered to replace plastic rings and shrink film. They use minimal material, are recyclable, and have become the visible face of sustainable multipacking.
  • Basket carriers. The classic handled carton for bottles, strong enough for repeated handling, with generous printable surface, effectively a billboard at the point of purchase.
  • Fully enclosed cartons. The familiar 6-, 12-, and 24-pack cartons that fully surround the units. They deliver the most protection and the most branding real estate, and they hold up to repeated handling by consumers and retail staff.

There’s no single right answer. A brand selling individual cans in a cooler may want shrink or a clip; one shipping 12-packs cross-country may want a fully enclosed carton. The choice balances cost, shelf presence, protection, and, increasingly, recyclability, and it often differs SKU by SKU. Getting It There: Shippers and Transit Protection

Direct-to-consumer beverage e-commerce has expanded as more states have updated their alcohol shipping laws, opening a real revenue channel, and a real packaging problem. Beverages are heavy and fragile in ways that punish weak packaging. Glass breaks, cans dent, and a single leak can ruin a whole pack. Industry references put glass breakage loss in the range of a couple of percent, and every broken unit is more than the lost product: it’s a refund, a damaged label on the survivors, and a poor first impression.

Getting beverages to a doorstep intact is an engineering problem with a few consistent answers:

  • Immobilize each container. Molded pulp trays and corrugated inserts that hold each bottle or can in its own pocket, isolated from its neighbors, so there’s no contact and no collision.
  • Right-size the shipper. A corrugated outer carton sized to the pack and rated for the loaded weight and stacking, not a stock box with void fill.
  • Test against real conditions. International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) testing validates packaging against the shock, vibration, and compression of the distribution environment, and carriers publish their own performance standards. Packaging tested against those forces survives the network that untested packaging doesn’t.

A practical note often missed: much breakage originates at the pack station, not in transit. A bottle not seated in its insert, or a reused carton that’s lost its strength, packs fine but protects poorly. Consistency in how the protective packaging is applied matters as much as the design.

The Thread Running Through All of It: Sustainability

Across decoration, multipacking, and shipping, one force keeps showing up: recyclability. PETG sleeves over PVC, paperboard carriers over plastic rings, recyclable corrugated over plastic void fill. This isn’t only a values choice. Extended Producer Responsibility programs in a growing number of states tie fees to how recyclable packaging is, which means secondary packaging decisions increasingly carry a cost signal as well as an environmental one. A brand choosing formats today is smart to choose with that direction in mind.
